Elsie M. Ray, of 143 Second Street, Deposit, passed away on April 15, 2005. She was born Elsie May Roemer in Union City, N.J. to Frederick and Lena Roemer on March 31, 1908.
She married Chester A. Ray Sr. on April 2, 1933 and came to Deposit as a bride. She was preceded in death by her husband on February 9, 1949, and her son, Chester A. Ray Jr. on February 10, 2002.
She is survived by one son and his wife, Frederick and Pauline Ray, Greene, N.Y.; two daughters, Marjorie Kroeger, Fort Collins, Colo., and Nancy Kopriva, Palm City, Fla.; and a daughter-in-law, Alice Ray, Deposit, N.Y. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Ray taught school at Rock Royal and in Hancock, N.Y. She was active in her community and a member of the United Methodist Women of Deposit, the Deposit Civics' Club, Order of the Eastern Star, Homemakers, and the Historical Society. She loved above all her family, but also the hills of her home, her poetry, her reading and her garden.
The family thanks the staff at the Vestal Nursing Center for their wonderful care and compassion during her stay. The memorial service will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are through the Zacharias Funeral Home in Deposit.
