Sylvin J. Steffes, age 76, of rural St. Cloud "St. Joe", died Sunday, April 21, 2013, at the Villa Loretto Nursing Home in Mount Calvary following a battle with cancer.

He was born May 18, 1936 in the Town of Marshfield in the St. Joe area to the late Leo & Katherine (Morgen) Steffes.

Sylvin attended St. Joseph Catholic Grades School and graduated from New Holstein High School in 1954. He served in the Army National Guard 127 Infantry 32nd Division from 1954 to 1962 serving active duty at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington from 1961 to 1962.

He had worked at the Kohler Company for 43 years as a laser machine operator and also in the generator division. He retired from Kohler in 2000. In his retirement, Sylvin worked at Personal Touch Flowers & Gifts in Fond du Lac with various remodeling projects and other odd jobs and volunteered many hours at the St. Francis Home in Fond du Lac. He also spent many hours working on various wood working projects.

Sylvin shared a lake home for over 33 years with his longtime friend, Gene Burg, on Lake Noquebay by Crivitz, WI. In addition, they traveled many times to European countries where a close friendship was formed with Ruth & Karlheinz Engel and their family of Germany in 1970. Sylvin loved deer hunting with friends, Gene Burg, Duwayne, Dean, & Greg Schneider, Joe Gutreuter, and Anthony Mielke. At his lake home, friendships were made with special neighbors, Chuck & Rose Buechler, Tom & Sandy Koskovich, and Greg & Karen Flak. Sylvin was an avid fan of the Packers and the Brewers.

He was a member of St. Isidore Parish - St. Joseph Church, the Holy Name Society, a 50 year member of the Catholic Knights Branch 179 of St. Cloud, a life member of the Fond du Lac American Legion Trier Puddy Post 75, a life member of the 127 Infantry 32 Division, and a member of the Kohler Company Quarter Century Club.

Survivors include his longtime friend, Gene Burg of St. Joe; his sisters and brothers, Delores (Elmer) Petrie of St. Peter, Mary Ann (Gene) Birschbach of New Holstein, Patricia Birschbach of Mount Calvary, Judith (Edgar) Zingsheim of Oostburg, Donald (Joan) Steffes of St. Joe, Joseph (Raye Marie) Steffes of Fond du Lac, and Vernon (Gail) Steffes of St. Peter; a sister-in-law, Donna Steffes, of Fond du Lac; many nieces and nephews; and John (Vicky) Baus and their family.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Leo & Katherine Steffes; his brother, Eugene Steffes; a brother-in-law, Henry Birschbach; and a special friend and deer hunting member, Ronald Wiskow.

Entombment will be in the Shrine of Rest Chapel Mausoleum at Ledgeview Memorial Park Cemetery in Fond du Lac.
