T. D. MITCHELL dropped dead at Uvalde Sunday, was the message received here Sunday afternoon. He, was one of Gainesville's pioneer citizens and well-known traveling men, succumbed to heart failure. Mr. Mitchell was visiting his daughter, Mrs. H. K. GRAHAM, and was preparing to board the train for Gainesville when he fell to the ground lifeless. Mr. Mitchell was 63 years old, born near Bryan, Texas 9Old Booneville) on Dec. 12, 1858, and died Feb. 20, 1921. He was the older of two children. His younger brother WILLIAM H. MITCHELL lives at Decatur, Alabama. His father, C. WHITNEY MITCHELL, was a Tennessean and his mother MARTHA DOUGLAS MITCHELL, a native of Alabama, though they lived in Texas a short time before the birth of the older son. His grandparents on his father's side, JAMES MITCHELL and JANE MCINTYRE HENRY, were descendants of early settled American families of Scotch-Irish origin, and lived at Connerville, Tennessee, where his father, C. WHITNEY MITCHELL, youngest of five brothers, was born. The oldest uncle, J. H. MITCHELL, emigrated to Texas in January 1937, settling in Robertson County. Shortly thereafter other family members moved to Robertson County, Texas. Soon after the birth of T. D. MITCHELL, the family returned to Alabama, settling near Decatur. At age of 18, young Mitchell returned to Texas, locating at Bryan near the place of his birth. Two years later in 1878, he returned to Alabama and married Miss SALLIE REBECCA NIX. In 1884, he, with his young wife and three small children, returned to Texas, settled at Gainesville. After 16 years of application in the mercantile business in Gainesville, he chose to be a commercial traveler for one of the large shoe houses of St. Louis, which position he held for 14 years. He remained with the St. Louis connection until they retired from business, then he associated with Nunn, Bush, & Weldon Shoe Co. of Milwaukee. Six girls and two boys were born to Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell. Of these, FANNIE LOUISE MITCHELL, TOMMIE GRAHAM MITCHELL, and Mrs. SARAH MITCHELL HUGHES are dead. The surviving members of his family are his wife, Mrs. SALLIE NIX MITCHELL of Gainesville, children, Mrs. MARY MITCHELL CALLAHAN of New York City, JOSEPH N. MITCHELL of Waco, Mrs. LUDIE MITCHELL GRAHAM of Uvalde, Mrs. RUTH MITCHELL BULLOCK of Hillsboro, and THOMAS DOUGLAS MITCHELL Jr. of Cisco.
From another obit: funeral services were held from the family home on South Denton Wednesday morning, conducted by Revs. A. J. HARRIS and A. B. INGRAM of Whitesboro, and R. L. POWELL of Gainesville, all Baptist ministers. Interment in Fairview cemetery arranged by G. J. Carroll. At the grave,..members of the Knights of Pythias of which he was a member took charge. Active pallbearers: S. ZACHARIAS, S. M. KING, GEORGE CULP, J. T. LEONARD, J. H. GARNETT, W. F. JACKSON of Dallas.
