Former City Businessman Grant L. Hamm dies at 80
Grant L. Hamm, 80, of Morris Road, RD 3, Oneonta, died Tuesday, June 15, in Downsville area.
He was born October 27, 1901, in West Fulton, the son of Minard B. and Minnie E. (Becker) Hamm. He married Josephine Day June 20, 1934, in Oneonta.
Mr Hamm was a lifelong area resident and was the original owner and developer of College Terrace, Overlook Drive and Suncrest Terrace in Oneonta. In 1929, he owned and operated an auto service station at 468 Main Street, Oneonta. In 1935, he founded the Hamm's Service Center, selling it in 1962 to Lionel "Lee" Guenette. In 1968, he purchased the Maurice Hotaling Farm and Home on Rt. 23, where he had since been residing.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, for over 50 years, and was a member of the Oneonta Lodge No. 466, F & AM.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Sidney (Nancy) Fisher, Homer, and Mrs. Antony (Molly) Gambino, New Baltimore; a son, Robert of Saratoga Springs; a sister, Mrs. John (Aletha) Newton, Albany; five grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services are 2 p.m., Friday, June 18, at First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Richard A. Breuninger, associate pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta.
Friends may call at Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta, after 12 p.m. Thursday, and until 12 p.m., Friday, at their convenience. The family will be in attendance 7-9 p.m., Thursday.
