On December 14, 1950 Gene enlisted in the United States Army to serve his country. Following his discharge he returned to the Lebanon, Kansas community to make his home where he worked and dedicated his time to his friends and neighbors. For many years Gene volunteered his time caring for the Lebanon, Kansas golf course and coaching the White Rock (KS.) high school golf team. His greatest love and enthusiasm was for his family and he especially cherished the time they spent together.
Gene was preceded in death by parents and brother, Brad J. Chapin.
Left to treasure his memory are: sons, Rick Chapin and wife Kay of Lebanon, Kansas, Randy Chapin and wife Kathy of Grover, Colorado and Rob Chapin and wife Jeannie of Longmont, Colorado; grandchildren, Tera Chapin, Lindy (Chapin) Feldmann, Melissa (Chapin) O'Neal, Ashley (Chapin) Konig, Lucas Gene Chapin and Cole Michael Chapin; great grandchildren, Alex Harm, Haley Feldmann and Jacoby Feldmann; brothers, Glen Chapin of Lebanon, Kansas and Jim Chapin of Smith Center, Kansas and a host of relatives and friends.
Graveside memorial services were at the North Oak Creek Cemetery south of Lebanon, Kansas with military rites by the Ft. Riley (KS.) Honor Guard.
