Art was a lifelong farmer in the Mason City area. In 1973, he was recognized by the State of Iowa for more than 50 years of farming and stewardship of the land. He represented the third generation to farm the original family farm which was designated as a 'Century Farm' in 1976. He retired in 1978.

He was a faithful member of St James Lutheran Church in Mason City his entire lifetime. He died at North Iowa Mercy Hospital at the age of 86 years.
