John Herbert Kirt Jr., 61, of Arrington, died Thursday, May 9, 2013, at his home. Born in Nelson County, July 10, 1951, he was a son of Fannie Kirt Mawyer and the late John Herbert Kirt Sr.
John had been a heavy equipment operator for Saunders Construction Company for 35 years. He was a dedicated and faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church where he served as church treasurer.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Nancy McElwain Kirt; son, Douglas Arthur Kirt of Arrington; brothers, James Arthur Kirt (Nanette) of Piney River, and Robert "Bobby" Lee Kirt (Pearl) of Afton; sisters, Karen Lynn Tyree of Shipman, and Sharon Louise Wingfield (Harold) of Amherst; and numerous nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends.
A funeral service was held Monday, May 13, 2013 at Bethel Baptist Church by Pastor Nathan Weidman with burial following in Jonesboro Cemetery. The family received friends Sunday, May 12, 2013 at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Bethel Baptist Church Youth Camp Fund, P.O. Box 1200, Amherst, VA 24521.
