Funeral services for James Christ Sanders, 79 year old resident of Waseca were held Friday, January 17, at 2 p. m. At the St. John's Lutheran church with Rev. Walter J. Pilgrim officiating. Pall bearers were four nephews, Henry, Fred, Arthur and John Reitforts, and Howard Plummer and Ernest Maas. Burial was made in Woodville cemetery. Eight children and a sister and brother survive. The children are Mrs. Anna Hoffman, Ewald Sanders, Siegfried Sanders, all of Waseca; Mrs. Lowell Young and Otto Sanders of San Diego, California; Christ Sanders of Upland, California; Mrs. Alvin Peavey of Beaumont, Miss., and Dewey Swoboda of Boston, Mass. Three small children passed away early in life and Mrs. Martha Kullberg, one daughter, died in 1939 and another, Mrs. William Roberts of San Diego, California, passed away in June of last year. The surviving sister and brother are Mrs. George Rietfort of Waseca and Diedrich Sanders of Germany. Mrs. Sanders was born July 22, 1867 in Oldenburg, Germany, the son of Christian and Lena Sanders. He came to this country in 1894, first settling in Owatonna a short time. With the exception of two years in Nebraska, he lived in Waseca county the remainder of the time. He married Anna Helena Gallo in Germany in 1889 who preceded him in death in 1940. Mr. Sanders' death was caused by a fall and complications which set in afterwards. He broke his hip the Saturday before Christmas and spent three weeks in the hospital. He then went to the home of his son, Siegfried Sanders at 509 Seventh street S. E. He contracted pneumonia later and died Wednesday, January 15th, at 11:30 in the morning. Out of town people who attended the services were the following: Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Swoboda and son, Donald, of Boston, Mass.; Mrs. Donald Beckal and Robert Sutherland of Austin; Raymond Swoboda of St. Louis Park; Julius Hoffman of Owatonna, and Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Riese of Rochester.
