Final Mission:
2LT. Marvin Reinhardt, O-837538, was the Co-Pilot aboard the B-29 #42-24717 'A-11'. Assigned to the 20th AAF, 497th Bomb Group, 871st Bomb Sq. Saipan. On 19 July 1945, it departed Saipan on a bombing mission #91 of Hitachi, Honshu, Japan. About 15 minutes after take off the aircraft lost the #1 engine. Shortly after that an electrical fire was reported in and near the radio compartment. Then they lost the #2 engine. This loss of power caused the aircraft to lose altitude and at 500 to 1000 feet the command to prepare to ditch was given. They ditched about 7 miles East of Saipan in the ocean. All crew members were seen exiting the aircraft. This was at 15*15' N/145*55' E. About 45 minutes later a US Navy destroyer arrived at the scene and rescued one of the life rafts. The survivors complained of extremely strong gasoline fumes that had caused some to pass out. Later on a Picket boat picked up 2 more survivors. 5 Crew were rescued, 6 were KIA/MIA/DOI.
2LT. Reinhardt was MIA and was declared KIA on 21 Jul 1945. He was honored at the Court of the Missing, Hawaii. Posthumously awarded the Air Medal and Purple Heart.
