German banker, promoter of colonialism, President of the Pan-German League and writer. He came from the Elberfeld banking family von der Heydt. He was a son of Karl Friedrich von der Heydt and Maria Theresa (Hurter), born in Elberfeld, Germany. He married Elisabeth Wülfing, they had two daughters. He served in 1876 as a volunteer in second Guard Lancers of Berlin. In 1881 he became one of the shareholders of the family Bank of the Heydt Kersten & Sons. He the became self-employed with the Bank Heydt & Co. in 1895.
