Douglas William Lowe, 91, of Hixson, passed away at his home on Tuesday, June 4, 2013.
He was a World War II and Korean War Veteran as part of the Corps of Engineers. He fought in the last major battle of the Pacific Fleet of World War II, known as the battle of Ryukyus. Most of us know the larger of these islands as Okinawa. It is one of the few battles where the Engineers were called to take the guns and be a part of the front lines. He received two separate Honorable Discharges.
Doug earned his living as a consulting engineer, registered surveyor and a Class A contractor holding the Professional Engineering in several states, Ohio, Virginia, Indiana, West Virginia, Florida and Kentucky. He was a Honorary Kentucky Colonel.
He was a member and deacon at Family Fellowship Church in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Doug is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Wanda; seven children; Phyllis (Paul) Vickers, Anthony (Phyllis) Lowe, Martha (Bill) Richardson, Larry Paul Ayer, Charlotte Ayer, Roger (Pamela) Ayer and Cherry (Michael) Davis; ten grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren; brother, John Lowe.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 pm on Thursday, June 6, and again on Friday, June 7, from 8 to 9 am at the North Chapel. Services for Doug will be held at 9 am on Friday at the funeral home chapel with Reverend Victor Alley and Reverend Jerry Howell officiating. Burial will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery at 10:30 am with military honors.
