He was born a son of the late Joseph Bennett Stancil and Bertha Leona Steen Stancil. He had lived in this area since 1939 and retired several years ago from the cutting room of Cannon Mills, Plant One. He was a US Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Poston Perkins VFW Post 8989 in Kannapolis. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church and enjoyed attending church, singing and visiting area nursing homes.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Perry Stancil.
