Don came to Gordon, NE when he was 16 in 1898. He filed a homestead claim in the Lavaca Flats south of Gordon. He was employed by the old Spade Ranch for awhile in Cherry County. He attended the Kansas City School of Watchmaking in Kansas City, MO in 1914. Later he attended the Needles School of optometry in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He moved to Gordon to establish a watch repair business. He was well known for his ability to repair things other than watches and clocks. Don married Gerda Madsen in Valentine, NE, who had recently arrived in Gordon from Copenhagen, Denmark. They had four sons - Paul, Joe, Thomas and Carl.
