COCOA : Mary M. Barra, age 82, a longtime Cocoa resident, died peacefully in her sleep, at Viera Hospital, Viera Florida, surrounded by her family. Margaret was the loving wife and then companion of Salvatore C. Aurigema ( deceased ) for more than 50 years.
Born in Brooklyn , New York, Margaret attended Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park Long Island. She was married in the early 1950's to Salvatore Aurigema and spent the following years a devoted mother to her 5 children. Margaret moved to Florida in the late 1960's where she raised her children to enjoy all the wonders of East Central Florida, including trips to Disney, fishing, the beaches of the Space Coast.
Margaret moved her family in the early 1970's to East Texas where she was employed as a seamstress and made many of her children and grandchildren's clothes and dresses. Her love of animals often found her at the local county fairs where her future devotion to animals and their causes became very important.
In the late 1970's Margret returned with her family to the sunny Florida she loved. In the early 1980's Margaret began working for Pitney Bowes, as an electrical assembler and completed her lifelong dream of getting her high school diploma by attending night school. Margaret used her dream as a focus to instill these educational values to her children and lived to see several of them reach their goals by graduating with advanced college degrees. She passed this love of learning on to her children and grandchildren through the years.
Margaret began her long working career back in the 1940's with jobs such as usherette at the local movie theater and gyroscope assembly technician for Sperry Rand which aided in the War effort. Her working career helped her raise her 5 children and ended with her retirement in the early 1990's.
