"He had lots of friends and a million stories to tell, particularly about baseball," Johnson said. Former Mayor Donald Canney, who was the city's special projects engineer during the Meaghan administration, described Meaghan as a "complete gentleman," who was an advocate of the commission form of government.
"I thought he did an awful lot for the community," said Canney.
Former Parks Commissioner Donald Gardner said he, too, was a close friend of Meaghan.
"He was super, he was special, he did a great job for Cedar Rapids," Gardner said.
MEAGHAN GREW UP in Estelline, S.D., and moved to Cedar Rapids in 1949.
He served as manager of the Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra and was first appointed as Cedar Rapids mayor to fill out of the term of Milo Sedlacek, who died while in office. After leaving city government, he went to Washington, D.C., in 1966 to work for the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Meaghan retired in 1981, and moved with his wife, Florence, to Sarasota.
SURVIVORS INCLUDE his wife; two daughters, Roberta Dietrich of Peoria, Ill., and Joan Vahey of Fish Creek, Wis.; five sisters; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
