Gulbrand (Gilbert) Paulson was born 11 October 1835 in Jevnaker, Hadeland, Norway.
Gulbrand (Gilbert) married Sigri (Sarah) Arneson on 28 November 1885.
Father: Paul Olson (Olsen) Carlsrud; born 27 June 1811 in Jevnaker, Norway, at Bergereiet; died 8 May 1849 in Jevnaker.
Mother: Else Gulbrandsdatter; born March 1805. She was christened 27 March 1805 in Norderhov parish in Buskerud County. Her family first tenant-farmed under Aslaksrud in Norderhov and then moved to Jevnaker and settled under Rønnerud -Eie farm.
Paul and Else likely planned to emigrate from Norway to the USA, but Paul died before they left. On 13 May 1850, Else and her children--Gulbrand, Ole, and Johanne--left for America.
In notes left by Inez Strauss Spellman:
1. Before moving to the Avoca area of Iowa County, WI, they may have lived near the Yellow Stone Church at Argyle in La Fayette County, WI.
2. Gilbert enlisted for the Civil War at Fayette, La Fayette County, WI, where the family was then living.
3. Gilbert was an excellent gunsmith, as was his father in Norway. During the war he met Buffalo Bill and repaired his guns. After the war Buffalo Bill sent his guns for repairs to Gilbert in Avoca.
4. Gilbert served throughout the war and marched with Sherman to the sea. He also served time in the infamous Andersonville Prison. His life was saved by a few ears of corn which he hid in his pockets. ISS presumes Gilbert was taken prisoner in a cornfield and expected the worst. Andersonville was a bloody-bullpen with ankle deep mud and no place to lie down.
5. After the war he discharged at Madison.

History: Gilbert Paulson was born in Norway in 1836 and immigrated to Wisconsin c. 1850. During the Civil War he served with Company E of the 31st Wisconsin Infantry. He enlisted in August 1862 and is listed as a POW. He was mustered out in 1865 and returned to Wisconsin where he would live the rest of his life. He passed away in Iowa County, WI in 1910.
