Albert Roehr, 77 founder of the Roehr Machine Shop in this city died early today at his home on Ninth Street. He had been ill for the past nine weeks.
Mr. Roehr was born on August 7, 1859 in the city of Eisleben, Germany. At the age of 14 he was apprrenticed to a locksmith. While still a boy he helped to erect the famous statue of Martin Luther that stands in Eisleben.
In 1891, Mr. Roehr came to America and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. Soon after he moved to Dayton and became affiliated with one of the largest machine shops in the country. His ability as a machinist speedily won him recognition and in 1902 he was commissioned to build 13 special embossing machines for the Chicago World's Fair.
He retired in 1933 and came to Sarasota to join his son Albert B Roehr, who settled here in 1914. After three years of retirement, Mr. Roehr, together with his sons Albert and Martin, established the Roehr Machine Shop on Washington Boulevard. He was actively connected with that shop until his final illness.
Soon after his arrival in this country, Mr. Roehr became a member of the German order of Harugari, Deutsche Eiche 469. For a number of years he served as Ohio state secretary of this organization.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Anna Roehr, and six children. Mrs. Anna Windham of Sarasota; Albert B. Roehr of Sarasota; Alexander Roehr of Dayton, Ohio; Martin Roehr of Sarasota and Clifford Roehr of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Funeral arrangements were indefinite pending receipt of word from distant members of the family.
