MRS. ETTA RIEKEN
MONTICELLO — Funeral services for Mrs. Etta Christina Rieken, 89, were held Monday afternoon at St. Matthew Lutheran church. The Rev. Anton Kirkegaard officiated. Interment was at Wayne Zion cemetery. Mrs. Rieken died at her home Thursday, Oct. 17, in Monticello after an illness of several months. She was born in Marx Ostfriesland, Germany, Jan. 29,1879, the daughter of John and Martha Remmers Schafer.
She came to the United States with her parents when she was five years old. She received her education in Jones county rural schools. She married Hanke Minehard Rieken Nov. 1, 1900, and the couple farmed in Jones county. He preceded her in death in 1920. Since 1931 Mrs. Rieken had lived in Monticello. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, a son, parents and two sisters. Survivors include: one son,John
W. of Monticello; two daughters, Martha and Mary Rieken, both of Monticello; four grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Also a brother, Herman Schafer of Anamosa; two sisters, Mrs. Fannie Siebels of Monticello and Mrs. Dean Ortgies of Anamosa. Casketbearers were Lawrence Rieken, Lawrence Siebels, Ernest Schafer, Elmer Hanken, John M. Rieken and George Siebels.
