Son of Jan Cermak and Marie Jordak. Born in Tučapy 22, Bohemia. His mother and two of his siblings died in a cholera epidemic in 1866. Joseph came to the United States in 1872. He and his full sister Terezie followed his father and stepmother, who came several years earlier with two half siblings (Peter and Henry).

He married Barbara Usaty in Chicago sometime around 1890 (possibly 1 Feb 1891). They had six children.

In 1930, Joseph worked as a painter in a car shop.
