Chief Koeppen dedicated his life to the Wheeling, IL Fire Department. He spent 43 years with the department, including 22 years as fire chief. Colleagues credit Koeppen with the idea of using lime-green fire trucks in the northwest Chicago suburb because they were more visible at night. He also helped Wheeling and five other area departments develop one of the first paramedic services in the nation. Chief Koeppen died at the age of 80 years of age. Cause of death was asbestos-related lung cancer.
