John Geist Sr. was born in Veringenstadt, Germany and was the son of Matthias Geist (born in Veringenstadt) and Genoveva Danner (born in Jungnau, Germany). He married Wilhelmina Tennyson and in 1886 John started the John Geist Forges in Nashville, Tennessee.

OBITUARY
GEIST-Monday morning, April 1, 1929, at 2:15 o'clock, at a local infirmary, John Geist, Sr. Survived by his wife, Mrs. Elise. Geist, and children. Mrs. Mary Colley, Mrs. Bertha Cain, Miss Elise Colley, John, Jr., and George Geist. Remains at at his home, No. 309 Jefferson street. Funeral from the home this (Tuesday) morning at 8:30 o'clock. Requiem high mass at the Assumption church at 9 o'clock. Interment Mt. Olivet cemetery. The pallbearers are: Honorary- Joseph Baltz, Sr., Henry Wiggs, H. C. Beck, G. A. Suter, Otto Haury, Ernest Kummer, Adolph Wasserman. Active- Paul Friedll, Ernest Friedll, Fred Friedll, Joseph Baltz Jr., John Baltz, John Cain, Jr., Joseph Cain, Hays Harnett. Martin & Rollow, 1715 Broadway.
