Elmer Johannes Koenck

Elmer Johannes Koenck, the son of Gustav and Olga Lage Koenck, was born April 26, 1923, in Arco, Minnesota. His childhood years were spent in Minnesota until 1931, when his family moved to Royal, Iowa. He attended High School in Hartley, Iowa and graduated in 1941. Elmer enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944 and served during WWII in Germany and Austria. He re-enlisted in 1946 and served in the Philippines and Korea. Following his honorable discharge from the Army in 1948, he moved to Spencer.

Elmer married Arlene Evelyn Bernhagen on June 3, 1950, at the First English Lutheran Church in Spencer, Iowa. Following their marriage, they lived and farmed in the Spencer area. They moved to their present farmstead in March of 1963. He farmed until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of First English Lutheran Church in Spencer. He also was a member of the Clay County Extension Council.

Elmer passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Sunday, September 17, 2006, at the age of 83. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Stanley; two sisters: Francis Langfitt and Hilda Gerber; one son-in-law, Peter Reparon; one granddaughter, and one great-grandson.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene, of Spencer, IA; one son, Steven Koenck and his wife, Sue of Cedar Rapids, IA; two daughters: Lynnette and her husband, Vernon Carpenter of Boone, IA; and Luanne Reparon of Dunsford, Ontario, Canada; a foster son, David Laubenthal and his wife, Patty of Spencer, IA; 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, three brothers: Peter of Fenton, IA; Marvin of Middletown, MD; and Elvin of Spencer, IA; four sisters: Vera Pettiecoat of Monument, CO; Iris Martin of Decatur City, IA; Lorraine Swanson of Welcome, MN; and Donna Koenck of Leon, IA; other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, September 20, 2006 at the First English Lutheran Church in Spencer with Pastor Paul Kaldahl officiating. Interment will follow at North Lawn Memorial Park, Spencer, Iowa.

Military rites will be given by the American Legion, Glen Pedersen Post #1.
