Rawleigh Chinn was a tobacco planter and an early settler of Virginia's Northern Neck with extensive land holdings. He was a highly regarded member of Virginia society, and a Deacon in St. Mary's White Chapel Church. He married Esther Ball, a half sister to Mary Ball, the mother of George Washington. Rawleigh and Esther had several children, but eventually divorced.

After Rawleigh's marriage with Esther continued to deteriorate, he began having an affair with Esther's cousin Margaret Ball Downman. The pair had 3 children together, and most likely lived together from 1723 when their first son Charles was born, until 1741 when Rawleigh died.
