Joyce grew up in Hebron, attended school and graduated from Hebron High School with the class of 1948.

Knowing she wanted to marry William Ralph Ortman the couple swiped his dad's 1936 Chevy and traveled to Fort Morgan, CO to get married not telling a soul. This date will always be remembered May 26, 1948. This union was blessed with the birth of three children.

The couple moved to the Belvidere area and farmed with his dad, Joyce was busy with the house chores and taking care of the kids and also helped with the farm chores.

In 1961 the couple moved to Hebron and Joyce worked at Drew's Fabric, Hesteds, and was high school secretary before starting Ortman's Cafe in 1971, which started down town in the former Big K Cafe and later moving up to highway 81 in the Ell's Cafe. They also owned the Thayer Hotel and ran the restaurant at the sale barn. The couple retired in 2005 form Ortman's Cafe after 34 years of great service to Hebron.

She enjoyed art, painting numerous pictures and some ending up at friends houses as special presents. She taught Sunday school and they liked spending time with their close couple friends. She also enjoyed crafts, writing, making cakes and decorating them for weddings and other special occasions, but most of all Joyce loved spending time with her family, shopping, cooking and just being together. She was always aware of all the gifts God gave her.
