A lifetime Russell County resident, he worked at Schneider Family Farm where he was a farmer and milked cows, he also worked as a painter for Perkins Brothers Painting and later for Don Michel Painting, and he was a self-employed painting contractor, until retiring. He was preceded in death by a brother, Leo Schwien; two half brothers, Ferdinand Schwien and Sigmund Schwien; a sister, Hilda Schwein; and two half sisters, Gertie DeWald and Mollie Karst.
