MRS. MARY PTACEK, FORMER EMPORIAN, KILLED IN ACCIDENT

Mrs. Mary A. Ptacek, 81, former Emporian, was killed in an accident in Kansas City Friday afternoon. She was standing on the right running board of a driverless car in the driveway of the home of her son, Michael E. Ptacek, when the car began coasting down the 40-foot incline and crashed into a tree, pinning Mrs. Ptacek between the car and the tree and ripping off the car door. Mrs. Ptacek was attempting to reach the emergency brake as the car rolled down the driveway.

Mrs. Ptacek and her daughter-in-law were entering the car to go shopping when the elder Mrs. Ptacek remembered she had left her purse in the house and her daughter-in-law volunteered to get it. As Mrs. Michael Ptacek returned to the front porch with the purse, she saw the car in motion and her mother-in-law attempting to reach the emergency brake. Mrs. Ptacek died before a doctor reached her.

Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 9 o'clock at the Visitation Catholic church in Kansas City. Graveside services will be conducted in Maplewood cemetery here Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

Mrs. Ptacek was born in Czechoslovakia and came to this country when a girl. She married the late Anton Ptacek and they moved to a farm on Rt. 2, north of Emporia, on January 12, from David City, Neb. Mr. Ptacek died about 23 years ago. E. T. Anderson bought their farm in 1932 and Mrs. Ptacek and two of her sons moved to Herington where they operated a hotel. For the past several years she had been living in Cleveland, Ohio, with her daughters, Mrs. Emil Shrolle and Mrs. Frank Hruby and visiting her sons in Kansas in the summers. On her trip to Kansas this summer, she visited at the home of Mrs. W. A. Gladfelter, Rt. 2.

She is survived by six sons, Michael Ptacek, Kansas City; Theodore Ptacek, Cleveland; Ernest Ptacek and Leo Ptacek, Manhattan; A. L. Ptacek, Wichita, and Dr. J. L. Ptacek, Webster City, Ohio; and two daughters, Mrs. Frank Hruby and Mrs. Emil Sholle, Cleveland.
