An obituary was published in The Oregonian newspaper, Portland, Oregon, on Sunday, September 19, 1897:

FRED EMERICH DIES SUDDENLY OF APPENDICITIS

Frederich [sic] Emerich [sic], the 17-year old son of Joseph Emerich [sic], of the Southern Pacific carshops, died very suddenly yesterday at 2 o'clock, in an ambulance shortly after the conveyance had started with him from his home on East Twenty-second street to a hospital. He was to undergo an operation for appendicitis. About a week ago he was out hunting, and, after returning, he complained of feeling unwell, but there were no serious developments in his case until Thursday, when Dr, E. H. Thornton was called to see him. Yesterday morning serious symptoms appeared, and it was apparent that his only chance of recovery was through an operation, and it was decided to remove him to a hospital. The ambulance was called for him, and he was placed inside. The start was made, but before the ambulance had proceeded more than a few blocks the young man suddenly expired. The physician stated the cause of his death was appendicitis. The death was a severe shock to his parents. The boy was born in Washington county, and has lived on the East Side for the past six years. Joseph Emerich [sic], his father, is employed at the Southern Pacific shops. The funeral will take place Monday, and the remains will be buried at Lone fir cemetery.
