Born in Rathen, Schlesien, Prussia, to Friedrich Kranz and Christiane Schmidt, he arrived with his parents and siblings aboard the Thuringia on 29 Oct 1873. He became a butcher in Milwaukee, and owned a meat markets in Milwaukee and Wauwatosa. He married Anna Woller on 10 Oct 1886, and they had 11 children. One son, Herbert, died in infancy; the other 10 survived to adulthood, and all are buried in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery.
