Donald A. Tessendorf, 88, of Onaga, died Sunday evening, July 14, 2013, at Eastridge Nursing Facility in Centralia.

Don was born January 9, 1925, at Onaga, one of two children born to Mitchell and Opal Dronberger Tessendorf and had lived nearly all of his life at Onaga. He attended White Pigeon country school prior to Onaga Grade School, later graduating from Onaga High School with the class of 1942. Don served in the U.S. Army during World War II, discharged at the rank of staff sergeant in 1943. While in the service, he was an artillery calculator for the precision firing of the 155 howitzer. After the War, Don was a chief clerk while serving in northern France. He returned to Onaga where he farmed and raised livestock while working as an electrician. He was Pottawatomie County Appraiser several years before retiring in 1989.

Mr. Tessendorf was a longtime member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ at Onaga, the Onaga Historical Society; and American Legion Post No. 85, also of Onaga.

He was married to Susie Mae Ogg, May 5, 1946, at Wakefield. She died January 17, 2008.

Survivors include a son, Tom Tessendorf of Onaga, two daughters, Linda Tessendorf of Onaga, Mary Marten of McPherson; a sister, Verda Rose McDonald of Jamaica Plain, MA; six grandchildren, Sarah Tessendorf, Sam Marten, Mitchell Tessendorf, Zach Marten, Elly Reece, and Allison Unruh; eight great-grandchildren; eleven nieces and six nephews.

Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 19, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ with Pastor Ty Sweeting officiating. Inurnment with military honors will follow at the Onaga Cemetery.
