Duke graduated from the Atkinson (NE.) High School. Duke enlisted in the US Navy and served from 1944 to 1946 attaining the rank of Fireman 1st Class. He was a member of the American Legion for 67 years and was very proud of being a Navy man. On December 21, 1946 he married Dorothy Frickel in Hiawatha, Kansas. They had two sons Roger and Gary. The family made their home in Atkinson, Nebraska. Duke raised
coon hounds and loved to go coon hunting. He belonged to a coon hound club and traveled all over showing his dogs. He enjoyed building and racing stock cars with his boys and Dick Wolf, a longtime friend. Duke also liked to fish the many "Holt County" farm ponds. He and Dorothy belonged to a neighborhood card club and hosted many summer picnics for family and friends. He loved to travel, meeting, talking, and making new acquaintances.
Duke is survived by: sons; Roger Hoffman and his wife, Mary Jo of Fort Collins, Colorado and Gary Hoffman and his wife Janet of O'Neill, Nebraska; 7 grandchildren; 19 Great Grandchildren; 1 Great Great Grandchild; sisters-in-law Esther Syfie of O'Neill, Nebraska, Rose Frickel of Atkinson, Nebraska, Lillian Marquardt of Norfolk, Nebraska and Pat
Hoffman of Sun City, Arizona and a host of family and friends
Duke was preceded in death by: parents; wife, Dorothy Hoffman and brother, Wayne Hoffman.
Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Atkinson, Nebraska, Military graveside rites by the Farley-Tushla American Legion Post No. 86 of Atkinson, Nebraska.
