Margaretha Elisabeth Barhorst was born on the Wieferich Farm in Harpendor, Steinfeld, Germany in November, 1800 to Tobias Barhorst and Maria Elisabeth Wehebrinck. She married Johann Theodur Hilgefort on October 24, 1830 in St. Catharina's Church in Dinklage. They had eight children before emigrating on September 24, 1847 on the ship Albert to the US. They established a farm on Hilgefort Road in McLean Township, Shelby Co., Ohio

In addition to the children who emigrated with them, they had the following children who died before they left Dinklage:
Clemens 12/5/1830 - 12/19/1830
Johan Dirk 8/8/1832 - 8/9/1832
Bernadina 5/12/1842 - 5/31/1844
Bernadina Margaretha - 9/18/1844 - 7/31/1846
