Earl Frederick Kroeger

Earl Frederick Kroeger, 97, returned to his loving Heavenly Father on Thursday, July 18, 2013.

He was born at home on the farm in Davenport, Iowa on January 10, 1916 to Frank Kroeger and Drusilla Anna Hammer.

He grew up in Moline and Milan, Illinois. During the depression, Earl and his brothers, Lloyd and John, went to Washington to work for farmers for the season. When they returned, he worked in a rock quarry until he was drafted into the Army.

He was sent to Fort Douglas and then Utah Defense Depot in Ogden, Utah where he met his sweetheart, Helen Butler. They were engaged before he was sent to Europe where he served as a supply sergeant for the field hospital with the Third Army under General George Patton.

Earl and Helen were married on June 11, 1946, in Ogden, Utah. A year later, their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Following their marriage, Earl worked at Utah Defense Depot until he began working in shops repairing wrecked cars while living in Idaho and California. He finally returned to work at Defense Depot in Ogden, Utah and retired in 1980.

He has been an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in many positions including the Sunday School presidency and bishopric. He also spent many years as a Scoutmaster. He fulfilled a Stake Mission and later he and Helen were able to serve in the Roanoke, Virginia mission. After returning, they spent the next 11 years working in the LDS Family History Center.

Earl was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Butler Kroeger, his parents, his brothers, Lloyd Kroeger, John Kroeger, two sisters, Drusilla Kroeger and Marie Lavenz.

Earl is survived by one sister, Barbara Zimmer, his children, Mary Devlin, Elaine (David) Smith, Fred (LouAnn) Kroeger, LuWana (Mike) Nielsen, Doug (Heidi) Kroeger; 25 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 27th at 11 a.m. at Lindquist's Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South.

The family will meet with friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary.

Interment, Clinton City Cemetery.
