Dean was a 1946 graduate of St Joseph High School, Rensselaer, IN. He served with the Indiana National Guard 113th Medical Battalion from 1948-1952. He was married to Flossie B. Bossung March 31, 1951. Surviving are his wife, daughter Colleen Hayden/Garrity, sons Scott Hayden and Tom Hayden.
