There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary, all at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.

Joe was born April 5, 1925, at Remsen, IA, the son of Michael and Margaret (Goetzinger) Gengler. Joe was raised and educated in the Remsen area and attended St. Mary's School.

On February 7, 1949, he married Viola (Baker) at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen. The couple farmed south of Remsen until moving into town in August 1984.

Joe was a devoted Catholic member of St. Mary's parish and served in Korea during World War II. Joe was passoniate about farming the homestead until he began his 25 years as custodian, serving the students, staff, and families of St. Mary's parish. Joe loved most of all spending time with his children and grandchildren. Even though Joe had 12 children of his own, there wasn't a child he didn't have time for. He enjoyed playing pinochle, making his famous pancakes, watching sports, and will always be remembered for putting himself second to others.

Joe is survived by his wife, Viola of Remsen; twelve children, Karen (David) Wimer of Fremont, NE, Connie Carter of Omaha, NE, Jim Gengler and Wendy Roads of Primghar, IA, Diane Pfeffer of Omaha, Jane (Bob) Prieksat of Fort Calhoun, NE, Laurie (Martin) Long of Lyons, NE, Rod and Barb (Thorman) of Fremont, Lisa Gengler of LeMars, IA, Dale and Diane (Boisen) Gengler of Sioux City, Kyle and Brenda (Ruhland) Gengler of Remsen, Tammie (Bill) Miller of LeMars, and Stacie Gengler of Omaha; 22 grandchildren, Chris and Scott Wimer, Jeff Carter, Amy Vos, Karie Aikens, Jon Gengler, Chelsey Pfeffer, Jason and Joe Prieksat, Megan, Miranda, and Martin Avery Long, Cody Gengler, Nikki Mausbach, Tyler, Brent, and Thane Gengler, Tyler Broveak, Derek and Daren Gengler, and Brittany and Shelby Miller; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Martha (Roy) Sitzmann and Rita (Howard) Sitzmann of LeMars; and 2 sisters-in-law, Margaret (Byrd) Gengler of Remsen and Margie (Bergner) Gengler of Quimby, IA.

Preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Michael (Martha), Aloysius, Clarence (Mildred), Raymond, and Vernon; and two sisters, Marie (Erwin) Tentinger and Norma (Paul) Kayser.
