Our loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother went home to our heavenly Father and was reunited with her husband on August 4, 2013 at the age of 90. Alta was born November 3, 1922 to the late Oliver and Ethel (Abramson) Newman in Cambridge, Il. Alta married her loving husband Hugo Joseph Hufnagel on January 23, 1946 in Peoria, Il, and then made their home in Lansing, MI. In Lansing she worked and retired as a legal secretary for the Rapaport Law Firm. Alta loved her family gatherings, especially at her cottage up north in Cadillac. She looked forward to hosting holiday festivities and making sure that everyone was always well fed. Alta enjoyed reading, playing cards, and 42 dominos. In her retirement years, she enjoyed traveling with her husband and spending their winters in Florida. Alta was an avid basketball fan of both the Michigan State Spartans and the Detroit Pistons. In recent years, she much preferred to stay at home, but had her suitcase packed and was looking forward to a Labor Day family weekend at the cottage. She is preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband of 56 years in 2002, a brother and sister in law, Loren (Harriet) Newman, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Joseph Daly, Steve (Eugenia) Naert, and Helen Hufnagel. Alta is survived by her children, Hugh (Susan) Hufnagel, Gary (Deb) Hufnagel, Larry (Jeanne) Hufnagel, Kristine (David) Kazmirzack, and Susan (Jon) Bickel, grandchildren, Erin (Mike) DeSmyter, Tara (Josh) Gusky, Noelle and Marc Hufnagel, Kristina (Todd) Easterday, Laurie (Glen) Morehouse, J.T. Matelski, Luke (Autumn) Matelski, Robert Kazmirzack, Ryan (Lanay) Kazmirzack, Jamie Kazmirzack, Leah (Dan) Luyk, and Jay Bickel; and many loving great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held Thursday, August 8, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at Emanuel First Lutheran Church, 1001 N. Capitol, Lansing, with Pastor David Putz officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-8 P.M. at the Palmer, Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Homes, Lansing Chapel. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service Thursday. Contributions may be made to Emanuel First Lutheran Church in memory of Alta. Condolences may be made at www.palmerbush.com.
