Stuart Frank Gottstein died Friday, August 9, at Kavanaugh House in Des Moines, leaving life as he had lived it, with dignity and courage. He was the son of Joseph and Besse Engleman Gottstein, born in 1928 and a lifelong resident of Des Moines.Stuart was a graduate of The Shattuck School in Fairibault, Minnesota, and the University of Nebraska, followed by post-graduate studies at Drake University. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War and was discharged as a captain.For more than three decades he developed a successful career as a stockbroker at Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner, and Smith, where the associations with both colleagues and clients were very gratifying to him. He retired as an Associate Vice-President of the firm.He was a long-time member of Temple B'nai Jeshurun where he served as an officer and a member of the Board of Trustees. He was an avid reader, tending to focus on 1940's mystery "noir" novels and naval warfare histories. He also belonged to a number of social clubs, most recently the Des Moines Embassy Club where he particularly enjoyed the Tuesday "Lunch Bunch" for which he acted as de facto social chairman.Stuart is survived by and will be greatly missed by his wife Sally (Klein), his daughter Beth and son-in-law Dr. Gary Thompson of Kansas City, MO., and one grandchild, Rachel, as well as his niece, Joan Gurvey of Atlanta, and nephew, Michael Friedman of Sarasota. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Gretchen Friedman.A service honoring his life will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, August 11, 2013 at Temple B'nai Jeshurun. Burial will follow at Jewish Glendale Cemetery.
