Born to Frederick BROUGHTON and his wife Eleanor, nee WYNNE, in 1897, Nell was the third of their four children. She was shown on the 1901 English census living at Farnham Hartley Wintney District School, Crondall, Hampshire, England with her only brother Fred. She became pregnant in 1913, and gave birth to a son whom she named after her brother. She then had a second son in 1917 but he died aged 16 months. Throughout the early 1920s, Nell worked as a cook in various locations in the south east of England. During this time, she met Albert Cornelius Rotgans, who was her partner for some 20 years (until his death). They had two children together. Nell died on 8 January 1974 - her first-born son's 60th birthday.
