1905 - 2002

Eleanore "Ella" C. Metzger, age 96 of Melrose formerly of New Munich, died Saturday, January 19, 2002 at Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose.

Funeral services were Wednesday, Jan. 23 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. Rev. Roger Klassen, OSB officated with Deacon Julius assisting. Interment followed in the parish cemetery.

Ella Kulzer was born October 12, 1905 in Spring Hill Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Michael and Mary (Sand) Kulzer. She was united in marriage to Raymond J. Metzger on May 31, 1927 in Greenwald. The couple lived on a farm in the New Munich area.

Ella's favorite pastimes were crocheting, sewing, quilting and gardening. She enjoyed cooking and baking and loved many flowers. She lived in Melrose at Park View Center for 12 years and then for a short time at Pine Villa Care Center. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich, Saint Anne's Christian Mothers, Legion of Mary, Little Flower Mission Group and a Crosier Apostolate member.

Survivors include her children, Charlene Dols and her husband, Jerry of Richmond, Sr. Mary Gabriel of Sauk Rapids, Linda Metzger and her partner, Kim Lane of Arden Hills, Anthony Metzger of Sauk Rapids, James Metzger of Fosston; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond J. Metzger on April 16, 1993; son, Alcuin Metzger; sisters, Christine Vornbrock, Susan Caspers, Pauline George and Rose Welle Vornbrock; brothers, John Kulzer, Ben Kulzer, Anton "Tony" Kulzer, William Kulzer, Roman Kulzer, Jacob Kulzer, Leo Kulzer, Alois Kulzer and Michael Kulzer; grandsons, Greg Dols and Scott Metzger; great-granddaughter, Robin Borgerding.

Serving as casket bearers were Mike Dols, Dave Dols, Peter Metzger, Mike Metzger, Tim Metzger and Ronald Borgerding. Serving as cross bearer will be Emma Metzger-Lane and scripture bearer will be Maria Metzger-Lane.

Serving as honorary bearers will be Eleanore Niehoff, Lorraine Hoppe, Clara Thull, Ann Rademacher, Lucille Meyer, Marie Viere, Margaret Niehoff, Pauline Janson, Mary Thielen and Eleanore Rieland.
