Dec 24,1912-June 21,2003

John Eckhardt, 90, of Scottsbluff, died Saturday June 21, 2003, at the Heritage Health Care Center in Gering after a lengthy illness. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 25, at 11 a.m. at the Calvary Memorial Evangelical Free Church in Gering with Dr. Char1es Bonds and Royce Eckhardt officiating. Private family interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff preceding the funeral. Friends who wish may call at the Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff today from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Mr. Eckhardt was born in Frank, Russia, the son of John and Anna Margaret (Urich) Eckhardt. He came with his parents to the United States on March 12, 1913. He received his education in Scottsbluff. On Dec. 19, 1933, he was united in marriage with Lydia Zier of Gering. During his teen years John learned the tailoring business from his father, who in turn gained his expertise from tailoring uniforms for the Russian Army. In 1929, the tailor shop was expanded to include dry-cleaning service, using a small second-hand dry-cleaning machine that was turned by hand, and a dangerous, foul-smelling naphtha gasoline solution. In 1941, John took over the sole proprietorship of the business that he had learned from boyhood, literally at his father's knee. John is survived by his wife, Lydia; son Royce and his wife Marjorie of Wilmette, Ill.; daughter Janet King and her husband David of Mohnton, Pa.; nine grandchildren, John Eckhardt of Chicago, Susan Eckhardt of Minneapolis, Matthew, Joel, Tim, Michelle, Jessica, and Christopher King all of Mohnton, Pa., and Laura Leggott and husband Ben of Scottsbluff. Four great grandchildren remain, Stephen and Christopher Eckhardt of Chicago, and Tyler and Emma Leggott of Scottsbluff. He was preceded in death by his son Theodore "Teddy"; brothers, Adolph and Walter; and sisters Bertha, Frieda, Wilma and Florence.
