Member of the Whig Political Party. Last mayor chosen by Albany Common Council, January 21, 1839. First mayor of Albany elected by popular vote, December 30, 1839. Elected mayor again, on May 5, 1840.
Father of Henry Reed Rathbone, who grappled with John Wilkes Booth in Ford's Theatre, April 14, 1865.
Rathbone's memorial is considered to be "a counterpart to the tomb of Scipio."
