Ferdinand emigrated to the U.S. with his wife Catherine and two children Ferdinand Jr. "Fred" and Anna in the spring of 1882. His parents were Detlef Nicolaus Martin Wiese and Louise Gertrude Hedewig (Bock) Wiese.

The Belle Plaine newspaper documented the tragic end of Ferdinand's life. Ferdinand unsuccessfully tried to end his own life by shooting himself in front of the home of his wife Catherine's brother, Hans Bruhn. She had recently left Ferdinand and was staying with him. Ferdinand died later at the home of Edward Triplett, while under the care of Dr. Hans H. Sievers. The newspaper article stated that Ferdinand was buried in the "city cemetery." He left his wife, and three small children: Fred, Charley and Mary.
