Johan A. Grobecker was born in Hanover, Germany about 1825. With his wife Catharine and daughter Anna, he arrived in the U.S. (from Bremen) on June 10, 1854 at the port of New Orleans, Louisiana aboard the ship Patriot. His occupation was "joiner", and his destination was Missouri. Indeed, his daughter Mina was born in Missouri. However, by 1862, the family had relocated to Kansas (U.S. IRS Tax Assessment Lists).

On the 1862, 1863 IRS tax list, John Grobecker was a retail liquor dealer. In other documents, he was a farmer. In his obituary, he was Dr. J. A. Grobecker.

Although a resident of Galena, Kansas at the time of his death, John died in St. Margaret's Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas (Wyandotte County) and was buried in Kansas City, Kansas. On the Kansas Deaths and Burials Index, 1885-1930, he is listed as a widow, rather than divorced (from his 2nd wife).
