World War II Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Varanasi, India, he served as a Captain in the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Norfolk Regiment, British Army. On May 6, 1944, Captain Randle led an attack on a heavily defended bunker at Kohima Assam, India. The whole company was pushed back, but Captain Randle stormed forward on his own toward the enemy position. In this solo action he was mortally wounded, but with his last strength he threw a hand grenade and eliminated the crew in the bunker. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on December 8, 1944.
