The anatomical terms Islands of Reil, Reil's finger, and the Beau-Reil cross-furrows are named after him. He was active as a doctor in Halle from 1788 to 1810. He consulted with Goethe on matters of science, and founded the first journal devoted to psychology in 1795 in Halle. He died from typhus contracted while treating the wounded at the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig. He was buried at his home on the Reilberg in Halle, which later became (1901) the Halle Zoo.
