Johanna "Hanna" Ferdinand DeGroot Berns was born in 1858 in Germany and died in 1907 in Carroll County, Iowa and was buried in the Glidden cemetery.
Her first marriage was to Reinhardt DeGroot who died in Germany. She married Henry D. Berns in 1895 and the family immigrated from Germany in 1906.
Those immigrating with Henry and Hanna were the following children: Tjadina (Dena) DeGroot (1882-1946), who married George Peter; Reka DeGroot (1884-1965), who married Harm Seeden; John DeGroot (1886-1930), who married Alma Bush; Hanna DeGroot (1888-1974), who married William Heuton and after his death, married Dick Johnson; Elizabeth Berns (1895-1982), who married Jacob Peters; and Bernard (Ben) Berns (1897-1965), who married Anna Janssen.
A daughter, Margaretta DeGroot, remained in Germany.
