Arthur Leo (Ozzie) Thompson, 73, of Lovingston, died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, at Lynchburg General Hospital, after battling a long pulmonary illness. Born on Oct. 9, 1939, in Lovingston, he was the son of the late John Adley Thompson and the late Bessie Moneymaker Mechem Thompson.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William Linwood Mechem, Jr and his brother-in-law, Cupie Richard Beverly, and numerous aunts and uncles.

Ozzie was a former Nelson County Sheriff's Deputy and later employed at Nelson Food Mart in Lovingston, and Midway Market in Colleen.

Ozzie loved to talk and visit with his many friends and family members and always looked forward to playing poker with his buddies on Friday nights and cheering for his team The Washington Redskins on Sundays. His most favorite thing to do was looking after "his boys" Christopher and Thomas.

Ozzie is survived by his sister, Vera Mechem Stevens, her daughter Faye Stevens Purvis and husband, Robert, his sister, Elizabeth (Nita) Thompson Beverly, and her daughter, Catherine Beverly Acord, and husband, Mike all of Lovingston, his sister, Patricia (Pat) Thompson Bazzle, her daughter, Lora Ann Bazzle, of Hillsville, his special daughters, Karen Lynn Tyree, of Shipman and Sharon Louise Wingfield, and husband, Harold, and "his boys" Christopher Ray Wingfield and Thomas Joseph Wingfield, all of Amherst. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
