Professor Schinnerer Dies Suddenly

Dr. Otto P. Schinnerer, assistant professor of German, who had been associated with the university since 1919, died suddenly early Saturday morning after a heart attack. He was 52 years of age.

Educated in this country, Professor Schinnerer studied at Concordia Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana, before obtaining his B.A. at the University of Illinois in 1913. He came to Columbia to study for his master's degree, which he received in 1914. After service as a censor in the Army during World War I, Dr. Schinnerer returned in 1919 to take up teaching duties here. Much of his work was concerned with German and Austrian literature. He obtained his Ph.D. in 1924 with a doctoral thesis dealing with a noted German critic and author, and was known as an authority on the works of Arthur Schnitzler, Austrian dramatist.

Professor Schinnerer was also editor of the "Germanic Review," which is published by the Columbia Department of Germanic Languages. Two standard college texts, "Beginning German" and "Continuing German," written by Dr. Schinnerer, are now in use in Columbia language courses. He is survived by his wife and one child, a daughter, (Columbia Daily Spectator, Volume LXVI, Number 29, 10 November 1942)
