Mrs. Eva M. Meyer, who died Saturday morning [July 14, 1883] of apoplexy, was buried this afternoon from the residence of her son-in-law, Fred L. Unterkircher. She was the widow of an old citizen and had a numerous acquaintance in this city.

-- Burlington Daily Gazette, July 16, 1883, page 4.

Eva M. Loewer was born about 1823 in Hesse-Darmstadt, a State of the German Confederation. Sometime prior to 1850 she immigrated to the United States, and married Wilhelm Julius (William) Meyer, who was born in 1818 in the Kingdom of Hanover, another State of the German Confederation. In the 1850 Census, William and “Eve” are living in Ottawa, Putnam County, Ohio. His occupation is listed as physician, and they have no children.

In the 1860 Census “Wm and Eve Myer” are recorded in Franklin, Lee County, Iowa. He is listed as a physician who owns real estate valued at $300 and personal property at $200. Their children are: Lucinda, 9; Charles, 8; Emry (Henry), 6; Philip, 4, and Emily (Amelia), 2. The four oldest were born in Ohio, and the youngest in Iowa, which means they moved to Iowa sometime between 1856 and 1858. William enlisted late in 1861 to serve in the Union Army, and died May 22, 1862, at Louisville, Kentucky.

Eva and her family are listed in the 1870 Census in Franklin, Lee County, Iowa (their last name is spelled “Mey”). Her children are Lucinda, 19, Charles, 18 (a sadler), Henry, 16, Phillip, 14, and Molly (Amelia), 12. In the 1880 Census Eva M. Meyer is living in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa, with her children Henry G., 26 (a wagon-maker), and Amelia W., 22. They live next to her son, Charles G, 26 (keeping news-stand), and his wife Nettie.

Eva’s maiden name is shown as “Loewer” in the 1880 Des Moines County marriage records of her daughter, Amelia; but as “Laver” in the 1925 Ohio obituary of her son, Charles. Charles’ obituary also states in 1872 Charles moved from Iowa to Mansfield, Ohio, to learn the trade of carriage trimming at his uncle’s shop. The notice of Charles’ funeral states Edward and Albert Laver of Mansfield attended his funeral. The obituary of George Laver (born 1831 in Germany, died 1904 in Mansfield) described him as a carriage maker who came to this country in 1845, and who had two sons, Edward and Albert (they likely were the cousins of Charles Meyer). Philip Laver (1854-1908) is buried in the Mansfield Cemetery, and his gravestone names his parents as Philip and Christina Loewer (listed in 1870 census as Laver). It is likely Eva Loewer, George Laver, and Philip Loewer were siblings, the children of George Laver (1799-1875). It appears the family name has been spelled Loewer, Löwer, Laver, and Lauer.
