Chuck was one of three children of Spurgeon Brewster Wuertenberger and Agnes Stuart Downs. He was the first child born in the Fort H G Wright Hospital in New York. After his graduation from High School in Geneva, New York, he entered the US Military Academy, Class of 1965.

Upon graduation and after attending Airborne and Ranger Schools, he was assigned to the 24th Division in Germany. As the operations officer of the V Corps Long Range Patrol Company, he worked closely with German units and helped train a German Long Range counterpart.

In December 1966, he returned to Indiana to marry. Shipping out to Vietnam, he arrived there January 8, 1968. He lost his life on January 17 in Tay Ninh province, South Vietnam while under a strong attack by the enemy. For his gallant actions during this encounter he was awarded the Silver Star. At that time, he was was serving with 2/14th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division

He was survived by his wife and unborn son [his son was born in May, 1968]; as well as his parents; a sister, Jane Carolyn; and a brother.

Charles Edgar Wuertenberger was the recipient of the Silver Star, Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Parachutist Badge as well as Vietnam campaign medals.

His name is located on Panel 34E, Row 65 of the Vietnam Memorial.

Chuck married Tamera Watts on December 28, 1966. Their son, Bradley Charles Wuertenberger, was born on May 16, 1968.
Chuck's brother's name is Allen S. Wuertenberger.
