Alice Westfall Carlson, 93, passed away April 7, 2011. Alice was born Dec. 21, 1917 in Burlington, Iowa, the fifth of six children. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Richards, Missouri, where they farmed for a number of years. In 1928, they drove to California in a modified pickup, a two week journey that cost a total of $150.

They settled in Concord, where Alice attended Mount Diablo high school. After graduating, she worked as a secretary until 1938, when she married Wallin Carlson, who had been her high school business teacher. Shortly after they were married, Wallin began a forty-year career as a Professor and Administrator at California State University, Chico. In 1955, Alice was asked to take a temporary position as a secretary for Dr. Vesta Holt. That position lasted for 14 years and she eventually became the head secretary of the Natural Sciences Division. She loved her work and the people she worked with.

Alice enjoyed interacting with members of a sewing group, cultivating and arranging flowers, participating in church activities, and creative writing.

She is survived by two daughters, Judith Biehler of Chico and Barbara Makris of Bodega Bay, and a brother, Rodney Westfall, of Davis, CA.
